iCode, in collaboration with our server centre are currently investigating ways to offset carbon emissions generated by our web servers.
So after doing some research we discovered that "going green" with virtual machines or pc's is one of the many ways in achieving your green status.
So what is virtualization?
Well it is a software solution that emulates the physical hardware of a normal server or pc.
But is virtualization the answer to a green data centre?
With virtualization, it's always less expensive to run them and in the process they end up contributing to a greener IT but doesn’t seem to be the only way to have a green thumb.
Then you get your actual “Green” Servers, which are the actual physical machines.
So what's the difference between a "green" server and a traditional one?
Well to answer simply, green servers are run entirely on alternative energy and use “green components” that use less energy than their predecessors. For example some hosting providers are starting to use solar and wind power or they plant a tree for every new account they receive.
We hope in the near future to be able to offer a cleaner option for the environment when it comes to website hosting.
